Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 21
"Let's Play Some Demos!" Video Series YouTube Playlist
Welcome to Part 21 of the Let's Play Some Demos! | LPSD series!
For those who are new, I aim to provide commentary and feedback on game demos for educational purposes! In addition, with how saturated Steam is, let's get these indie games some attention, shall we?
For this episode, I used some of the demos I had grabbed from the Myths & Legends Steam Event!
RULES!
Typically, there are 4 demos. Each demo gets 30 minutes, not including the adjustment of settings and character creation. I might up it to 5 and/or play a great game for longer if there are technical issues. And NO AI's spit, aka. plagiarism laundering.
Today, I played 4 demos for your enjoyment:
- Constance - Planned Release Date: Q4 2025 Constance is a 2D hand-drawn action adventure featuring a paintbrush-wielding artist, striving to escape from a colorful but decaying inner-world, created by her declining mental health.
- Dragoon Ascension - Early Access Game Dragoon Ascension is a Party-Based RPG that strikes a balance between adventure and combat. Defeat enemies and witness the rise of the kingdom of Windfall. Find tomes that the Ancients left behind to learn their secrets. Become the ultimate weapon.
- Kara Fantasy - Available: Coming soon Embark on an epic journey through five mystical forest worlds to save Princess Kara and show the world that the true hero lives in each of us!
- Welcome to Elderfield - Available: Coming soon Welcome to Elderfield is a spooky farming RPG. You can farm, fish, mine, cook, craft, befriend townsfolk, beseech the old gods, investigate mysteries, watch unsettling news programs, get lost in the dead mall, die in your sleep and more. There's lots to do in Elderfield!
The links above are to the games' Steam pages.
Also, Welcome to Elderfield's demo is available on itch.io!
With all that out the way, here are my opinions, via the "Layered Compliment Sandwich":
Constance had me freakin' out in a good way! Until it pissed me off due to user error. We'll get to that. The dash mechanic had me phasing through spiky plants! Whoever thought of that should get a raise! The color palette was great! The art style was amazing! And the whole thing gave me Hollow Knight vibes! Which I said multiple times in the video, but, ya know what, worth mentioning again to those who have never played it. It's a great comparison to make, AND I'm not going to be making it again here. It did that enough in the video. I love this game, but I have the same issue with it that I do with others; puzzles. Also, while playing, they didn't make the direction of a particular attack clear. I also had issues with the controls, but, again, user error. I needed to do an attack, but I kept dashing. Oops. I WANTED to keep playing, but I suck at puzzles... and with attacks that have to do with timing... and the timer was running out... Go play it, cuz I can't. On stream, cuz I will feel like an idiot the entire time.
Dragoon Ascension was either Available when I looked at it, then the developers switched it from Available to Early Access or I forgot to mark it as Early Access. 1-800-MYY-BAAD either way. Moving on, PIXEL ART! And it was very well done! Also, because I didn't pay attention to when I could Save, I fucked up. I died, and had to start over, because I didn't save. Also, when we could Save should have been more obvious. Also, why couldn't I flee from the second fight with the bandits? And why wasn't there a warning before the first fight, before entering the area, that it would be difficult? Dragon Age: Inquisition has warnings on the map, which I thought was convenient. And why does the dialogue take so damn long to pop up? And why can't we skip it? Back to good things, the combat was incredibly unique! Having a timer before being able to attack was definitely engaging! I wanna play with it more! And, it will probably get a "Let's see if we can finish the demo!" stream series!
Kara Fantasy is a great-looking pixel art game! And the first thought that came to my mind as I started going through levels was Hades! Pixel art Hades! It also had me asking a lot of questions. So, we're Princess Kara's bodyguard. Cool. Why did someone have to give me a sword? Why do we have to find armor and whatnot as we progress through the game? Why don't we have armor already? Why didn't we have health potions right off the back? Why don't we have a bunch of money right off the bat? Why is the Princess living in a house on a farm and not a castle? Is she in exile and that's why our equipment, and there for our ability to protect her, is shit? Now, despite all these questions, I wanna keep playing the game. The combat was fun, and the crafting looked like it was going to be. Being able to get yourself back to town whenever you feel like was cool, but it would be nice to receive a warning advising all progress was going to be lost doing so. And, it will probably get a "Let's see if we can finish the demo!" stream series!
Welcome to Elderfield was as excellent as I expected it to be and was my favorite of the bunch! I want it! I want it! While I tend to lose my mind when it comes to pixel art, the art for the NPCs when there was a conversation was a CLOSE second. Whoever came up with the design for the rat that attacked me is both a piece of shit and needs a raise. The combat was annoying as fuck because HOW was a rat doing more damage than me? How? Good thing I made food. Another gripe, while I'm already griping, though it's a small one, why is the enemy health bar in the bottom left corner? Inconspicuous? Again, minor thing. I remark on it being there when I FINALLY killed it. That shouldn't have taken as long as it did. I DO love the fact, that after I went into the sewers, I was warned I wasn't prepared for a fight. Thank you! Also, this game made me want to explore and talk to people. Not necessarily investigate, cuz I've watched horror movies, but I do want to look around for resources since food is, apparently, important. Stardew Valley has competition! And, it will probably get a "Let's see if we can finish the demo!" stream series!
Overall, despite some of my gripes, I want all of them, and they are on my wishlist.
As a reminder, Constance will be available in Q4 2025, whatever that means, Dragoon Ascension is available as an Early Access Game, and Kara Fantasy and Welcome to Elderfield are Coming Soon, without a date.
And that's it for the Part 21 mini-review! Thank you for reading!
