Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 22

"Let's Play Some Demos!" Video Series YouTube Playlist

Welcome to Part 22 of the Let's Play Some Demos! | LPSD series!
For those who are new, I aim to provide commentary and feedback on game demos for educational purposes! In addition, with how saturated Steam is, let's get these indie games some attention, shall we?
For this episode, I used some of the demos I had grabbed from the Myths & Legends Steam Event!

RULES!
Typically, there are 4 demos. Each demo gets 30 minutes, not including the adjustment of settings and character creation. I might up it to 5 and/or play a great game for longer if there are technical issues. Or a demo finishes before the timer goes off.
And NO AI's spit, aka. plagiarism laundering.

Today, I played 4 demos for your enjoyment:

  1. Crowncity by Haon Games - Coming Soon To Early Access Planned Release Date: November 2025
Building and managing a late medieval city is a series of challenges. Build wells to provide drinking water, markets to provide bread and food, and theaters to collect performance tax. Stage mode continues an interesting story and journey, random map mode fills each game with a new experience.
  2. Dungeon Alchemist by Briganti - Early Access Game
Dungeon Alchemist is mapmaking software for tabletop RPG's that enables you to make amazing, high-quality maps in seconds!
  3. Parliament of Hell 1796 by Perfect Crime Games - Coming soon
Parliament of Hell is a horror comedy adventure game set in 18th century England. Young gothic poet Matthew has been forced to serve in Government by his Father. He will get himself kicked out by any means necessary, even if he must call on the Devil himself…
  4. Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars by Square Enix - Available
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is an RPG set in a world of swords and sorcery, told entirely through the medium of cards.

With all that out the way, here are my opinions, via the "Layered Compliment Sandwich":

Crowncity, once I got into a groove, was quite fun! The art style is amazing! The color palette is simple! AND what knocked me out of my groove were the redundant tutorials. It didn't help the beginning story was WAY too damn long! We got the same information about the King who hates us, how many times? We were told the name of our father, how many times? We were given the same instructions for a quest, how many times? LET ME DO THINGS! The tutorial being repetitive made me impatient to the point where I stopped paying attention. I had to look back at it once to figure out where to find a building in the BUILD window. When I was ACTUALLY able to play the game, I had a blast! Shorten the tutorial, please!

Dungeon Alchemist was a new idea for the series. Since I haven't been building in a game engine for you folks, for a while, I decided to show some map making! And I had fun with it! After figuring out I could adjust the UI to make the font size bigger. It SHOULD have been easier to find. And the size I changed it to SHOULD have been the default setting, with the option to make it bigger! Also, items should have been easier to find. I was struggling more than I should have been. The art being well designed made up for it, a bit. What REALLY helped was when I found out I could wrap a room around the corner of another! THAT was a nice touch! I mentioned I would recommend it to my partner, who is a Dungeon Master, aaaaaaaand he already knew about it. It doesn't do everything he needs it to. Okay.

Parliament of Hell 1796 was a pleasant surprise! It had an entertaining story and the puzzles they gave were ACTUALLY enjoyable! I LOVED the art style! It's difficult to fuck up pixel art with me! My one issue, surprisingly, was the color palette. The color combinations gave me a headache. I was initially disappointed when there was a warning next to the Full Screen option saying it was buggy. The game remaining in a smaller window was, probably, why my headache subsided as quickly as it did. I was having difficulty looking at it and reading the text. The animation for the main character walking was amusing! The character design and the level design were spectacular, but the contrasting colors are a no. And I loved the story, too! This "no" makes me sad...

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars got me invested in the main characters pretty quickly! After the game finally loaded. The story, the ruler asks a group of people to get an important item back, is a bit of a cliché, but, eh. There was some tension in the group! It seemed the female lead wasn't the most respected member of the group. I say "seemed" because the reaction to it was from her point of view. She could have been ASSuming the disrespect. The art was what drew me in, and the story kept me in! I didn't wanna stop! And the concept of the game being told through cards was unique in its execution! It reminded me of another game that used cards to tell your story, but I forgot the name... And the fact there's a card game within a card game was amusing! My biggest concern is the obvious one; how difficult it was to load. The game was worth the wait, though!

Overall, I want Crowncity and Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, and they are on my wishlist.

As a reminder, Crowncity is Coming Soon To Early Access Planned Release Date: November 2025, Dungeon Alchemist is in Early Access, Parliament of Hell 1796 is Coming soon, no release date as of writing this, and Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars is Available.

And that's it for the mini-review of Part 22Thank you for reading!
