Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 27
"Let's Play Some Demos!" Video Series YouTube Playlist
Welcome to Part 27 of the Let's Play Some Demos! | LPSD series!
Thank you for your patience! I have been exhausted for the past week. I haven't been able to do much, since getting back from the Renaissance Fair. Big events tire me out. It affected my partner for a few days, too, but it was worth it!
For those who are new, I aim to provide commentary and feedback on game demos for educational purposes! In addition, with how saturated Steam is, let's get these indie games some attention, shall we (and the occasional AAA game I think isn't getting enough attention)?
For this episode, I used some of the demos I had grabbed from the Myths & Legends (I think) & Women's Day Sale Steam Events!
RULES!
Typically, there are 4 demos. Each demo gets 30 minutes, not including the adjustment of settings and character creation. I might up it to 5 and/or play a great game for longer if there are technical issues. Or a demo finishes before the timer goes off.
And NO AI's spit, aka. plagiarism laundering.
Today, I, attempted, to play 4 demos for your enjoyment:
- ATRI -My Dear Moments- by Frontwing & 枕 - Available
"As the world sank, I found you." In the near future, a sudden and unexplained sea rise has left much of human civilization underwater. In a little town slowly being enveloped by the ocean, an unforgettable summer is about to begin for a boy and a mysterious robot girl... - Kimochii Classroom by Radish ASMR - Planned Release Date: Q2 2025
Welcome to Kimochii Classroom! An atmospheric, slice-of-life visual novel with stunning visuals, a beautiful soundtrack, and an immersive story. Who will you meet first? - Tea for Sana by Pillow Soup - Coming soon
Tea for Sana is a story-driven exploration game set in the mountains of a Slavic-inspired fantasy world. Discover recipes, forage for ingredients, and cook traditional dishes to restore the balance between the mountain spirits and the villagers below. - VORON by Merk Games - Planned Release Date: To be announced
🕊️🌳🗻You are a raven with an important task: guiding lost souls to their new home. In this story-driven adventure game, you will learn how to fly, explore a Norse-inspired, tiny open world, and don't forget to croak from time to time — that's what a raven does, right?
The links above are to the games' Steam pages.
Kimochii Classroom is also on itch.io!
Why was it an "attempt"? Because VORON made me rage quit.
ATRI -My Dear Moments- had me cinched when the timer went off. Perfect cliff hanger! I see myself doing a "Let's Finish the Demo!" video, or stream. It had me asking so many questions after I finished the video! Why did grandma buy a robot? What, along with climate change, caused the rising sea? Why did grandma leave everything to our main character, whose name I can't recall, when she doesn't like kids? Are we going to find out? AAAAH! I LOVED IT! Also, the art was fantastic! And it was very easy to tell who the important people were by their design. It has the same feature one would expect of a visual novel, a lack of agency, but the story being fascinating and the art enticing made up for it. It got curiouser and curiouser...
Kimochii Classroom is another visual novel. I said it about the last demo, and it's worth repeating; it being a visual novel, the player's lack of agency, but the story being cute and the art adorable makes up for it. The story wasn't what I expected. My brain went where it shouldn't have, and I blame the increase in fan service in Anime, but I digress. This visual novel felt different than ATRI, though, and I think it's because we don't get to see what the main character looked like. Our lovely main character, named Simon, which I remember because it was pronounced in a way I didn't expect, was faceless. They clearly had a personality, which was nice. They clearly have empathy, which was a pleasant surprise, and a contrast from the previous demo. The story making me ask a lot of questions had me wanting to keep playing. Why doesn't his sister know he works at a bar? I'll find out, eventually...
Is Tea for Sana really about going around, remembering all of the recipes our grandma used to cook, until we remember what Sana's favorite tea is? Are we really? Instead of just asking the woman? IF so, that's both stupid and intriguing ONLY because of the magic. And because of the art. If you've been here a while, you know I LOVE pixel art! We need more pixel art games, and this one was fantastic! The puzzle-like elements are pretty interesting as well, but I get the feeling, if the timer hadn't gone off, I would have rage quit because I was getting to a point where I was going to be stuck. And I don't like being stuck because I feel like an idiot. And when I feel like an idiot, I get angry. And I don't like being angry. Saved by the timer. I thought I said it in the video, but it looks like I didn't (or I got too impatient to keep looking for it); I LOVED the character design! And how you got to see different aspects of the magic in the world! The world-building makes me want to keep playing!
VORON has a FASCINATING premise! Carrying the souls of the dead into the afterlife, as an animal, is unique! And the sound design for the crows was amazing! Each crow had their own caw! My biggest issue was with the flying. Why was it split between both of the controller sticks? It made things incredibly difficult. Why couldn't the left stick be for both speed and steering? I was also having trouble judging distances, but that could be a me thing. I'm hoping what made me rage quit was a glitch; I accidentally fell into the water, and was transported to land. I tried to fly, and the bird would go through the motions, then they would get stuck in the "wing spread" position, and never flap. Then I would fall into the water. I couldn't leave the area because I couldn't jump up onto the rock behind me. I was stuck. So I rage quit. And I was disappointed.
Overall, I want all of them, but VORON, and they are on my wishlist.
As a reminder, ATRI -My Dear Moments- is Available, Kimochii Classroom's Planned Release Date is Q2 2025, and Tea for Sana and VORON's release dates have yet to be announced.
And that's it for the mini-review of Part 27! Thank you for reading!
